Linganore High School recently celebrated a memorable Senior Night for its varsity volleyball team on October 21 . It marked a special occasion that honored the hard work and dedication of senior players, some of whom played for years on the team.
The event is designed to recognize the contributions of seniors as they approach the end of their high school athletic careers.
Seniors were honored in the ceremony that took place prior to the game against Catoctin. Players included libero Makenzie Shearer (#3), middle hitter Natalie Slivinsky (#7), defensive specialist Ava Parker ( #11), defensive specialist Adrianna Howell (#4), middle hitter Chloe Kim (#18) and setter Sara Burke (#14).
The event was held in the school gymnasium, filled with family, friends and supportive teammates. The gymnasium was decorated with steamers covering the entrance doors and posters that underclassmen made with pictures of the players and their graduation year, 2026.
The LHS volleyball seniors were introduced one-by-one and were handed a rose from the younger players on the team. Family members were invited to join the seniors on the court as they walked, giving seniors the opportunity to show their support systems throughout the season. During each senior’s procession, an announcement written by each student to share their gratitude for coaches and teammates along with future plans of each athlete and their personal favorite volleyball memories was read.
LHS Sports Medicine and physical education teacher Andrea Poffinberger serves as the varsity volleyball coach. She gave a heart-warming speech to the seniors, highlighting many special moments and the “highs and lows” they had together as players.
“I hope as you reflect on your high school experience that volleyball has been more of a sport to you, because this group has been way more than just athletes to me,” Poffinberger said.
She also shared her favorite memories throughout the last four volleyball seasons and left the team with a quote to remember: “Limits like fears are often just an illusion, remember there is strength in struggle and your confidence in communication is key.”
As for the game itself, the Lancers fought hard. There were 4 sets played, and the Lancers came out with a 3-1 win against the Catoctin Cougars. Throughout the game, the crowd chanted loudly and with enthusiasm for the success of the team.
One highlight of the game was junior outside hitter Amy Latimer, who had 12 kills and 7 digs to finish off the night.
Overall, the game and the win was a positive end for the seniors’ special night.
