On Friday, January 24 at 6:30 p.m. the Linganore High School (LHS) varsity girls’ basketball team walked away with a win against the Frederick Cadets avenging their past loss to the team.
Even after losing the tip off, the Lancers took an early lead. Starting freshman Kelsey Ryan (23) was quick to put up a three pointer and scored two foul shots. Ryan led the first quarter and was a massive help in securing the team’s victory.
Ryan’s teammate Ava Dorfman said Ryan “played better than ever before.”
Senior Kayleigh Lake (21) finished the first quarter with a two pointer and a foul shot, and LHS senior Taylor Moran (10) scored another two points, increasing the lead 10-7.
The team built on this lead almost tripling their score in the second quarter, with a total of 29 points. Moran kept up the quick pace and scored nine points, while Bradyn Mackay (4) added two shots from the three-point line.
Despite an injury in the second quarter, freshman Liana Maxwell helped lead the team to victory, scoring eight points throughout the game.
Ryan, Maxwell, and Moran worked together and contributed to each other’s success by snagging rebounds and using their knowledge of the opposing team to their advantage.
“We study the teams we’re gonna play,” LHS coach Rachael Easterday said. “We know what they’re gonna do before they do it.” said Coach Easterday.
Easterday spoke about the importance of teamwork, competitiveness and her athletes’ trust in one another.
Easterday said her team’s goals are “to stay competitive like we are and continue to work as a team together … our goal is to win regional finals.”
According to Easterday, the highlight of the game was “everybody stepping up.” One of the team’s most notable players, sophomore Sedona Brown, was sick and ultimately out for the game. Despite this setback, the team banded together and came away with yet another win, with a final score of 53-38, continuing their four game win streak and bumping their record to 12-2.
