World Kindness Day was November 13 and Linganore High School (LHS) has done many things to celebrate.
Patricia Aburto, the advisor of Best Buddies club, organized the Kindness Banner. People wrote their names on pieces of heart shaped paper and put them on a large banner displayed in the cafeteria. The purpose was to show how many people value kindness and are willing to show it by displaying their names.
“About 400 Linganore staff and students pledged their kindness and placed their hearts on the banner,” Aburto said.
The idea of celebrating World Kindness Day came from Aburto, and Linganore began celebrating it at the end of the COVID closure.
“I started the event because I love interacting and working with our students and love to spread kindness,” said Aburto. “I saw a post on social media that World Kindness Day was celebrated on November 13 every year. I thought it would be nice to celebrate it here at Linganore.”
Aburto is really proud of her students because this year they wanted to host the event and put a lot of their energy into the banner.
Chloe Coccia, the senior co-president of Best Buddies shared that “hanging out with all [her] friends and celebrating kindness” was what she enjoyed most about World Kindness Day.
Alongside the Kindness Banner, Student Voices presented a Thankful Tree, where people could sign paper leaves and share what they were grateful for. When people went to sign the Kindness Banner, they could also add to the Thankful Tree.
Linganore Student Voices member freshman Maleah Alaimlo believes that World Kindness Day is a day where people should show kindness to everybody, no matter their differences.
Linganore freshman Maleah Alaimalo is in Student Voices, which is advised by LHS math teacher Jennifer Weiss this year. Weiss was the one who had the idea of the Thankful Tree, which is a tradition celebrated in her house.
“We’ll go to Baker Park and find a branch that has a whole bunch of things on it, and my own children will fill up the leaves and we’ll hang them,” said Weiss.
Although both of these events were organized by different school clubs, they still allowed the entire school to take part and join in spreading kindness and thankfulness ahead of the holiday season.
What do you think of World Kindness Day? Will you help celebrate it?
