“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” is one such series. The newest season is based on the second book, “Percy Jackson and the Sea Of Monsters.” The first episode of season 2 was released on December 10. The season will consist of eight episodes aired every Wednesday.
Fans have been waiting almost two years to the day for season 2, as the first episode of season 1 aired on December 19, 2023. The new series has already done substantially better than the movie adaptation of the same book.
In season 1 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Percy discovers that he is a demigod and that monsters are real. Percy’s mom, Sally, takes him to Camp-Halfblood to be safe, but along the way “dies”. Season 1 is about Percy getting a quest to get back his mom, who was supposedly dead, but instead was taken to the underworld. Along the way he makes bonds that change his life.
The book, Sea Of Monsters follows Percy as he finds out that the borders of Camp-Halfblood are failing, and allowing monsters to get in and attack the campers. This leads to Percy, Annabeth, and Tyson, leaving camp to find the Golden Fleece and Grover and bring them back to camp, saving camp and Grover.
As of December 17, 2025, season 2 has garnered a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, according to SuperHeroHype and has done better than its season 1, which received a score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. Rotten Tomatoes gathers reviews, mostly that are written by professional critics. When picking out a movie or TV show many people look at the Rotten Tomato rating.
“Walker Scobell was born to play Percy Jackson and continues to demonstrate that fact, Charlie Bushnell’s Luke really comes into his own as a villain here, and I’ve especially grown to love Leah Sava Jeffries as Annabeth,” Callie Hanna wrote when reviewing the second season, on the Rotten Tomatoes website.
One of the reasons that this TV series has seen major success is the inclusion of Rick Riordan, the author of the book series, as an executive producer and writer, to help casting to make sure the actors are able to well portray his characters, help with the adaptation and ensure it remains faithful to the books, and rectifying past mistakes from the movies.
Many viewers also like that the actors are closer in age to those of the characters they are portraying than the film version. Percy Jackson is supposed to be 13 in this new season “The Sea of Monsters”.
Walker Scobell who plays Percy Jackson in the series, was only 15 when filming this past season, being only two years older than the age he is portraying. However Logan Lerman who played Percy Jackson in the movies, was 20 years old when they were filming the second movie, making him 7 years older than the book’s age.
The first season had a lot to deliver on to live up to expectations, as many viewers of the series had read the books before watching the show. Season 1 took its time introducing the characters that the audience would spend their journey with, so it took some time to get to the action of Camp Half-Blood, a safe place for demigods to stay from monsters. This is located in Long Island, New York.
Fortunately, in season 2, the audience was able to jump right back into the world of Percy Jackson, learning about new characters as the story progresses.
The first three episodes went at a quick pace. In the first episode, the viewer sees a special bond formed between title character Percy and his best friend, Grover, in Season 1.
Episodes 2 and 3 end on a cliffhanger, catching the audience’s attention and luring them back for the next week’s episode.
In episode 2 Percy and Annabeth are trying to be given a quest to rescue the camp and Grover. During a chariot race, they are attacked by birds, and causes the camp to go into chaos. Percy then makes a controversial decision about the quest.
Episode 3 starts the new quest this season of Percy Jackson and his friends. As the episodes progress, the arcs of the characters start to form, as well as the strong connections they make with one another.
Season 2 has improved from season one significantly and continues to do so as episodes continue to come out. Each episode has humor and action throughout, while also ensuring the audience is able to connect with the characters.
Season 2 has already proven to be just as good as the first, if not better. The action this season seems to really engage the audience, which may improve the show in some eyes.
In addition to this, season 2 is mostly driven forward by the teenagers, which makes the younger audience relate to it even more than before.
However, teenagers taking the wheel is not the only thing driving the show. The different settings the characters find themselves in are well made, immersing the audience in the world of Percy Jackson, which helps the audience better understand what is going on and better enjoy the experience.
Despite how similar the setting looks to the book, there are many parts of this season that are distinctly different from the book. One of the most noticeable changes is how Tyson, a new character, is perceived in the books versus the TV series.
Tyson, portrayed by Daniel Diemer, is a wimpy, homeless nerd at Meriwether Prep, who gets constantly bullied. He is taken in by the Jackson family, and where Percy quickly befriends him and looks out for him at school. As the show progresses, Tyson and Percy build a special friendship, fueled by the plot.
The relationship between Tyson and Percy differs from the relationship between Percy and Annabeth.
In season 1, Percy and Annabeth’s personalities would be classified as a sort of clash. They would often disagree and get into arguments about whose plan was the better choice. This is because they did not know each other as much in the first season, compared to the second.
While in season 2, the audience can see and hear a change when watching them speak to each other. This could qualify as a subtle change in how Percy is more responsive to her, or how Annabeth is more open to exploring their options. This is because they have learned to trust each other and trust the other to make certain decisions. Even though they are very different, they compliment each other in the best ways and season 2 compliments this in a beautiful light.
The relationship between Luke and Annabeth is complicated in many ways, especially this season. In the season 1, it is heavily implied that Annabeth believes Luke can be saved, after he betrays the camp. This season dives deeper into this idea, showing just how strong Annabeth believes in her relationship with Luke.
These connections between not only the characters of Percy, Annabeth and Grover but between the actors who portray them has strengthened as the show continues to be filmed and released.
Walker Scobell, who plays Percy Jackson, has lived up to the high expectations for his performance in this new season. Despite only a few episodes released, he has proven a phenomenal talent. Some sources like Winteriscoming say he is perfect for the role.
Leah Jeffries, the actress behind Annabeth Chase, has had an amazing performance throughout both seasons, and portrays the daughter of Athena with the appropriate fierceness.
Finally, Aryan Simhadri, who portrays Grover Underwood, has an incredible way of conveying emotions throughout both of the seasons, especially feelings of stress and fear.
There have been many challenges that the characters have had to face in the season already. However, they have become stronger because of these, not only within themselves but also with the connections that they share.
The finale of season two will be released on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, concluding this adaptation of the “Sea of Monsters.”
Filming for season 3 has already begun, starting back in August 2025, after getting the greenlight from Disney +. Season 3 will cover the third book of the series, “Percy Jackson and the Titans Curse,” and many fans are eagerly awaiting the next season already.
