On April 2 and 9, Linganore High School hosted a student dodgeball tournament to support Blessings in a Backpack.
Blessings in a Backpack mobilizes communities, individuals, and resources to provide food on the weekends for school-aged children across America who might otherwise go hungry.
According to their website, Blessings in a Backpack strives to ensure that children in America, including Frederick County Public Schools, are fed by empowering individuals and communities to take action. On average, $175 will feed a child every weekend for the 36-week school year. As a result, children will be nourished and ready to learn.
All LHS students were eligible to participate, and Each Linganore team consisted of 6 to 8 players. It costs 10 dollars for every team to take part in the event, and 10 teams participated in the tournament.
The dodgeball tournament was also open to other students to watch as spectators. Each student in the audience had to pay 2 dollars for a wristband, which allowed students to watch each dodgeball game throughout PREP and during periods 1, 3, and 4.
During PREP, students with wristbands were dismissed from their classes to watch their peers play against each other in the dodgeball tournament.
JV football coach and LHS work coordinator David Kenderdine was the referee during the dodgeball tournament.
LHS business teacher Lisa Shockey supervised the Advanced Business Management class at LHS while they set the event in place. They had to plan, organize, direct, and staff the event; they learned about each step and had to apply them in a real life setting.
Students recruited staff to help out with the event, including JV football coach and LHS work coordinator David Kenderdine being the referee during the dodgeball tournament. They created the paper bracket and hung flyers for the tournament, helped with running the clock and music, and found availability for the gym.
