Wednesday, June 1st, the Class of 2016 took their first steps into the next chapter of their lives, receiving their high school diplomas, as they crossed the stage in front of friends and family at Mount St. Mary’s University.  Board of Education member, Colleen Cusimano said in her greetings to the class, “The torch now passes.  You will be the guides.”

Linganore High School’s 54th graduation was an emotional and memorable night for all, as it was not only a farewell to the 354 graduates, but also a salute to Principal David Kehne’s 17 years of service at Linganore High School before he takes his new role as principal of Urbana High School.

Kehne’s speech not only captured the hearts of the graduates, but the entire audience: he received a standing ovation.  Kehne reflected on his years at Linganore, commending the students for their various achievements, such as the recent lacrosse state championship title brought home by the boys varsity lacrosse team and the over six million dollars in scholarships earned by the Class of 2016.

However, Kehne remained humble, passing all the glory to the students.  “Linganore was great before I arrived and will continue to be great long after I leave.”

“Let your joy be in your journey, not in some distant goal.” Ismael quoted Apple CEO, Tim Cook, as he spoke to his fellow class members, reminiscing about the many memories and opportunities that have overwhelmed him since his first day of high school.  Ismael specifically remembered auditioning to be drum major and adventures in journalism as two of the opportunities he took advantage of at LHS.

Because of his personal experiences of trying new things while in high school, Ismael inspired students to take risks, try different things, and to “always be open to new directions” even if you feel you have already chosen your path.  Quoting Oprah Winfrey, “Every stumble is not a fail and every fall is not a failure.” Ismael expressed the need and importance of failure in life.

After leaving the graduates thinking of the memories that will accompany them in the future and all of the opportunities that lie ahead, Noah paid tribute to the true chief of the Lancer tribe, Mr. Kehne saying, “You are what makes Linganore Linganore.” before exiting the stage.

The night followed with the recognition of those who earned earned the student and teacher Golden Lance Award, Zackary Yurich and Julian Lazarus.  The members of the senior class nominate this award, and, for the student, it comes with a $1,000 prize.

Yurich is known for his time spent on both the soccer team and as treasurer of the Student Government Association. “He is a disciplined athlete and a quiet, purposeful leader,” said Kehne.

Yurich plans to attend St. Mary’s College of Maryland this fall.

A surprised Julian Lazarus greeted his family after being awarded the faculty Golden Lance award.

The night was a time for the graduates to recognize the friendships and memories made while being a part of the Lancer family.

Dr. Alban quoted graduate, Olivia DuBro, who recognized the journalism program as her favorite memory.

In addition to performances by the choir, Abigail Weinel and Kylan Connolly Linganore, sang a pitch-perfect “Long Live” by Taylor Swift.

One by one, the graduates walked across the stage, shook hands with dignitaries and received their diplomas from Kehne.  As the last student received his diploma, the Class of 2016 became the adults of the future, throwing their caps in the air in celebration of not only their years spent at Linganore, but also the next chapter of their lives.  Cusimano said the Class of 2016 “takes with them parts of the community”  while keeping their Lancer experiences close to heart.
