Drivers, start your engines and head to Linganore High School on April 26 for the Lancers Make It Happen auto show. Enjoy music and BBQ, sponsored by Carter-Q,  in the stadium parking lot.

The show will be held from 12-3, and LMIH is asking for a minimum $5 donation to enter your vehicle in the competition. There is no cost for a visitor to enter, but spectators are encouraged to bring supplies or a monetary donation for the cause. One car, truck, and motorcycle will be chosen as the winner, and each will receive a cash prize, courtesy of Bobby’s Garage.

Ms. Servey’s English 12 class has organized the Lancers Make it Happen service project. It is a research/persuasive project for the Studies and Composition class, and the outcome will benefit poor and underprivileged students in Linganore High School area elementary schools.

The class read “What is Poverty?” as a sample for a definition essay. When they discussed the essay, students did some research and were distressed at the number of students in their own community who are living in poverty – approximately 300 students in nearby elementary schools. They decided to do something!

Because the students use class time to organize the project, each student has a graded leadership role. This way, the students in English 12 get “real world” experience on how to work with others and organize and meet long-term goals.

The class has extended an invitation to any LHS class that wants to help. The project will also help students meet community service requirements.

Each class that is participating in Lancers Make it Happen will be asked to complete a commitment card. This card will allow students to set a goal of how much they will raise and/or collect for LMIH. By signing and completing the card, students will pledge to do their part in serving the community.

Lancers Make It Happen recently held a fundraiser at Jersey Mike’s in Mt. Airy on Thursday April 9th. Fifteen percent of the proceeds were donated to help fund the Lancers Make It Happen project.

So far, LMIH have collected 300 backpacks that were donated by LHS staff and students and a graduate of Clarion University, Mrs. Servey’s alma mater. They are now accepting donations of supplies to fill them up for FCPS underprivileged children.

These include:

  • jump ropes
  • erasers
  • sunscreen
  • pencils
  • notebooks
  • folders
  • frisbees
  • chalk
  • band aids
  • puzzle books
  • bubbles

They have set a goal to fill 300 backpacks for Liberty, New Market, Green Valley, and Twin Ridge Elementary School students in need. The class is very eager to receive donations as they look to meet their goals by May 15.
