Class of 2020 member Jake Muller set out to create a space in which those who enjoy working on, riding, and racing bicycles could meet and learn, launching the Linganore Bike Club which meets on A days. The club involves students who enjoy trail riding, mountain biking, and even competitive cyclists.

One member, Andrew Strohmeyer, is a competitive cyclocross racer. Strohmeyer represents the USA Cycling team, and was selected by the team based on his performance in other races. Strohmeyer has competed in countries such as France, Netherlands, and Denmark.

“I started the club because I have a love for bikes. I wanted a way to form a group of friends who all share this interest. We currently have around 10 members,” said Muller.

At the club meeting on February 8, Muller invited Eric Smith, store manager of Patapsco Bicycles, to give a presentation. Smith brought with him a demo mountain bike and answered any questions students asked, as well as demonstrated repairs for issues bikers may face while on the trail.

“We have a close connection with a local shop (Patapsco Bicycles of Mount Airy, MD), giving us access to information, advice, and insider knowledge. This is a huge advantage for us,” said Class of 2020 member Ethan Butehorn.

“If you’re interested in getting into the sport, you should get into it at whatever level your budget will allow, work with a local bike shop in order to get personalized advice, and just get out there,” said Smith.

The club meets next on March 29. See Jake Muller or the club’s supervisor Ms. Renata Emery in student services if interested in joining or for more information.
