On March 16, the ceramics class participated in face casting.

Face casting is an art technique which makes it possible to make clay pieces with a facial design. To do this, a mold is placed on someone’s face and is kept on until hardened. Once it has hardened, it is then peeled off to use the imprints for a clay piece.  Natalie Roth a “face” for the face casting.

Addison Clum, a ceramics three student helping out with the project, said ¨For the project, they need to create a clay face from the casts and decorate it however they want.¨

Face casting, or body casting dates back to 15 Century Europe, when face casting was used for private collections of art, exclusively for royalty or the wealthy. These castings led to the development of an idea of beauty and helped artists study facial anatomy.

Mr. Christian Madenspacher´s art classes were excited to participate in the facial casting project. They took turns placing plaster on each other’s faces and waiting for it to dry. Using this technique, they can add their own facial design to their projects. The project taught the students a new art technique and brought a new realm of possibilities for new projects.

Junior Mary Britton said, ¨The project was a fun, learning experience. I’m glad I got to participate.”
