With a record of 2-3, varsity field hockey girls are taking more swings to win more games. Varsity had a slow start and a young team, but are now learning quickly to work and play better by pulling together to defeat some of the stronger and more experienced teams.

On September 18th, varsity had a strong win against Oakdale. With a score of 2-1. That sent a message that shows what the outcome of pure team work can bring.

Anna Smarrelli and Morgan Mathews both had goals during the game. Mary Britton had an assist. Fans can read more about this game on the Frederick News-Post.

“Our defense is what really won us this game. Our defense this year is really strong. I was definitely a little worried about it before the season, but Allison King, Emily Cole, Mallory Safsten, and I are all working very well together. Defense is all about being aggressive. We play with a lot of heart which is why we are succeeding. We want to win more than the other team does,” junior team captain Paige Wilhem said,

Mrs. Mary Cate Henry is the head coach for varsity. Henry has been coaching at Linganore for 12 years and graduated from the high school and  Linganore’s field hockey program.

Senior midfielder, Anna Smarrelli, is verbally committed to play D1 field hockey at Appalachian State University. She has been playing field hockey for five years.

“I decided on going to Appalachian State because I just knew it was the right school for me. I love the atmosphere there and the uniqueness of the school. As for going D1, I know it’s going to be tough and a lot of work but I can’t wait. It’s a big responsibility but I love playing field hockey so it will be worth it.,” said Smarrelli.
