The end of the regular season saw the Lady Lancers varsity soccer team headed out to the pitch in their sectional finals playoff match.

Thursday, Nov. 5, the Lady Lancers (No.1) hosted the Urbana Hawks (No. 2). Coming straight in from a 7 to 1 win from their previous home game against the T.J. Patriots, the girls team took care of business with a nail biting 2 to 1 victory.

The players stunned the crowd at the end of regular time with their back and forth play. Both teams scoreless in the first half of play found the back of the net in the last minutes of the game. The Lady Lancers put up the first goal and just when they thought it was over the Hawks responded back with a goal of their own.

The two teams proceeded into the first period of overtime. The Lancers came out strong from the tip, getting off quite a few shots in the beginning. About two minutes left  in the first overtime period, senior Montana Hill buried a shot into the back of the net, seizing the victory for the team in sudden death.

Head Coach Howard Putterman and Assistant Coach Phil Werner were both pleased with the outcome of the game.

“The team played really well tonight connecting with each other with short quick passes and applying pressure on Urbana whenever they had the ball,” said Putterman.

Not only was the girls offense sensational the defensive back line was able to hold its own and shut down the Hawk’s powerhouses.

“One of the big differences was our ability to sustain an offensive attack while still absolving the pressure they put on our defense. Kudos to our defenders for holding the most dynamic offense in the state to one late goal,” said Putterman.

The girls will advance to play the Magruder Colonels (13-3) in the regional finals on Tuesday, Nov. 10, 6pm at home.

The Frederick News Post also reported on the game, highlighting Montana Hill’s performance.
