Faced with a grueling schedule, tennis teams are “smashing”

As of April 10th the girl’s tennis team record is 5-4 and the boy’s team record is 6-3.

On April 10th both the girls and the boys won their matches 3-2 against Thomas Johnson.

Winning for the girls:  first doubles Andrea Huston and Courtney Shrider, second doubles Sara Kubic and Caitlin Kubic and third doubles Brianna Scott and Rhinnon Wiland. Winning for the boys:  first singles Harrison Rasmussen, second singles Andrew Tran and first doubles Sam Brady and Alex Beaumont.

On April 9, 2014 both the girls and boys won their match at South Carroll. The girls won 3-2 and the boys won 4-1.

Winning girls: first doubles Andrea Huston and Courtney Shrider, second doubles Sara Kubic and Caitlin Kubic and third doubles Taylor Thomas and Maddie DiNardo. Winning boys: first singles Harrison Rasmussen, second singles Andrew Tran, first doubles Sam Brady and Alex Beaumont and third doubles Alex Dao and Matt Raabe.

On April 8, 2014 the girls and boys won their matches against Frederick at Frederick. The girls’ score was 3-2 and the boys’ score was 3-2.

Winning girls: second singles Brianna Scott, first doubles Andrea Huston and Courtney Shrider and second doubles Sara Kubic and Caitlin Kubic. Winning boys:  first singles Harrison Rasmussen, second singles Andrew Tran and second doubles Alex Dao and Rahul Patel.

On April 4, 2014 the girls won their home match against the undefeated Middletown with a score of 3-2. The boys also won their match 4-1.

Winning girls: second singles Rhiannon Wiland, first doubles Andrea Huston and Courtney Shrider and second doubles Sara Kubic and Caitlin Kubic.

On April 2, 2014 the tennis teams played against Walkersville at Walkersville. The girls lost 2-3 and the boys won 3-2.

On April 10, 2014 the girls finished their previously postponed match at Tuscarora. The match started on April 3rd and before the rain the lady lancers seemed to have the lead. However, the girls lost 1-4 to Tuscarora. The boys played three matches before the rain started. All the boys that played those matches lost therefore, the boys will not finish the match and the win goes to the Tuscarora boys’ team.

The only winning team was the first doubles Andrea Huston and Courtney Shrider.

On March 31st the girls and boys tennis team played Urbana at home. The girls lost 3-2 and the boys lost 1-4.

On March 28th the girls and boys played Oakdale at Oakdale. The girls lost 3-2 and the boys lost 1-4.

Winning girls: first doubles Andrea Huston and Courtney Shrider and third doubles Brianna Scott and Rhiannon Wiland. Winning boys:  first singles Harrison Rasmussen.

On March 24th the tennis teams played Thomas Johnson at Thomas Johnson. The girls won 3-2 and the boys won 5-0.

Winning boys: first singles Harrison Rasmussen, second singles Andrew Tran, first doubles Sam Brady and Alex Beaumont, second doubles Danny Gatte and Jimmy Mawdsley and third Alex Dao and Matt Raabe.

Playing girls second doubles is Sara Kubic and Caitlin Kubic. Sara is now playing for her fourth year, and Caitlin is playing for her first year. This year the sisters wanted to team up and see how far they would get. Sara said, “I wanted to play with her [Caitlin] since it’s the only year I can and I thought it would make for a great senior year.”

For the past 20 years Katherine Becker was the girl’s tennis coach. This year Brett Bonneville is the new girl’s tennis coach: he was previously the assistant boys’ varsity basketball coach.

Last year the girls’ first doubles, Andrea Huston and Julia Reifman won counties, regionals and the first game at states. Huston and Reifman went to counties with a 17-1 record and came out of states with a 26-2 record. That was the first time in 15 years that Coach Backer had taken a doubles team to states.
