“‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers/That perches in the soul”

Those are the first few lines of Emily Dickenson’s poem “Hope is a Thing with Feathers,” read by Mrs. Brenda Bruning, mother of Riley Bruning, at the Favorite Poem project reading and dessert, hosted by NEHS, on Monday April 21 in the LHS cafeteria.

The Favorite Poem Project is a nationwide event that began in 1997, thanks to then Poet Laureate of the United States Robert Pinksy, who started the program shortly after the Library of Congress appointed him to the position. In  the first year of the project, 18,000 Americans, ages 5 to 97 submitted their favorite poems, and the program has since grown.

Many students, teachers and their family members participated in the event, including Mrs. Natalie Rebetsky, Mr. Roger Rebetsky, Mrs. Beth Sands, Annee Lyons, Ricky Smith and others. Ricky Smith and Dillon Mitcham were the masters of ceremony.  Mr. David Kehne, principal, opened the program with a welcoming speech.
