What is the progress with Linganore soccer teams?

The soccer teams’ regular season ended. As of October 17th, the boys’ Varsity record is 7-7 and the boys’ JV record is 7-5. The girls’ Varsity record is 9-1-2, and the girls’ JV record is undefeated.

Boys’ Soccer

The team beat Brunswick with a final score of 2-1 on Thursday, October 17th, the last game before playoffs. Both teams put up a hard fight to win the game, but Linganore prevailed with a final record of 7-7. Linganore didn’t let their guard down for a second; in the first half they were awarded a free kick from 50 yards. Junior Preston Windnagle, a defender, was able to put the ball in the back of the net and score the first goal. Linganore scored their second goal when sophomore Adam Needle, a striker, kicked off a corner-kick to sophomore Zack Yurich, a midfielder, who won the ball and passed it to junior Neal Roberts, a midfielder, who headed it into the goal.

“The season is going well. The team is working hard every day to get better and we are having a lot of fun along the way,” said varsity coach Josh Gilmore.

The October 15th game against the team’s rival power house, Urbana, was a nail biter with a final score of 1-0. Urbana’s field was cold, wet, and slippery. Linganore started out strong in the first half and the match was kept scoreless. Linganore slipped in the second half and Urbana scored the single goal.

“Our best game was against Thomas Jefferson,” said junior Andy Kirk, a center midfielder and one of three team captains for the team. “We came back with two hard earned goals and won the game 2-1.”

Near the end of the game, Brunswick pushed harder and earned a free kick that led to the goal against Linganore. Linganore held the rest of the game up and won with a score of 2-1.

“They need to shoot to score. They need to score to win. More shots create more opportunities for goals,” said John Yurich, Zack Yurich’s father.

Girls’ Soccer

The girls’ last game before playoffs was against Urbana at home. Linganore shutout Urbana 3-0 and had a well-deserved win. “We won because we all connected well,” said sophomore Montanna Hill.

“Varsity is currently rated number two in the region. They’re having the best year that they’ve had in many years,” said JV coach Jake Snow.

At the Urbana game, for their first goal, sophomore Elizabeth Coletti, a striker, passed the ball out wide to junior Danielle Ferris, a striker. The ball traveled back and forth in the goalie box for a while, which led Ferris to slot it into the far corner of the goal.

The second goal started with Coletti passing the ball over to junior Mckenzie McCaul, center midfielder. McCaul dribbled around two defenders, took a shot, and scored. For the third goal, McCaul had the ball on top of the 18th yard line, took a shot, and “the ball rocketed into the net,” said Rhianna Lapen.

“Urbana is a really physical team and they always have it out for us when we play them. The whole entire game was physical,” said Lapen.
