A Eulogy to Vine: A girl devastated for more than six seconds

by Nicole Muller, Reporter

Vine, the popular 6-second video social media site, was purchased by Twitter and officially launched in January 2013.  In October 2016, Twitter announced it would gradually shut down the service.

A Eulogy to Vine:

Many lives have been affected by you, Vine. You’ve inspired millions across the world, changed the lives of people, and discovered many new celebrities.

Some say that “Vine is just an app,” but you were more than that. You allowed people to show their creative side and entertained 100 million people in a single month. You were filled with 39 million clips, and you happily stored them all. So many laughs, cries, and memories were because of you. There is no such thing as a bad day when Batdad’s around.

Six seconds. Entire stories could be told in six seconds. Who knew, but you? Ideas blossomed, people became famous all in less than three blinks of the eye.  Before Vine, Jessi Smiles, Jack and Jack, KC James, and more were just ordinary people.

You had the patience to play videos, the good and the bad, over and over for anyone who wanted to watch them. You gave anyone and everyone an opportunity to become famous. You didn’t discriminate.  The most popular Vines, got millions and millions of views, copies, new memes and more.  Spongebob and rubber ducks are important to teen cultural literacy.

Your memories can still be found on Youtube and Instagram, but they will never be the same as watching them with you. It’s such a shame that you weren’t able to keep up with the other apps.

Rather than being spiteful and wanting the other apps to crash and burn, you wish for them to continue your legacy. All of the Youtube, Instagram, and Snapchat users can see your spirit in every video. The creativity and originality you sparked will never die.

I’m not the only one who will miss the stress relief you provided. After a long day at school and an evening working, it was always nice to watch some of your Gavin videos.

Thank you for playing a big part in our lives, Vine. I hope you have more than 6 seconds of peace.
