These feature stories highlight rising seniors who are becoming role models of Lancer Spirit.

Photography. Photoshop. Photo-adventures. This is Alexa Baughman.

For about six years, Alexa Baughman (otherwise known as Lexi) has been interested in photography, finding her passion while she was still in 6th grade, when she got her first SLR (single-lens reflex camera). Since then, she has developed her skills in photography classes and in her free time.

“Photography in high school helped me because I became more mature and had many opportunities since I was being led by a professional. I was able to get a professional’s opinion and guidance which has taught me a lot,” said Lexi. Tracey Ellis-Guss is Lexi’s photography teacher.

“I think Lexi is excellent, and it is my deepest hope that she continues to work with me and goes into professional photography. She is tremendous,” said Ellis-Guss.

Baughman enjoys viewing things from a positive perspective.

“I enjoy making average things beautiful. I look at anything and can see beauty in it, whether it’s a tree or a bunch of food. I love experimenting, too, seeing what I can do with the subject and Photoshop itself,” said Baughman.

Many people have recognized and support Baughman’s talent, asking her to take pictures for birthday parties and special events outside of school.

“Lexi doesn’t specialize in any one aspect of photography. She has an artistic eye for all subjects,” said Michelle Baughman, Alexa’s mom.

In the summer of 2015, Baughman will be interning at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab with the Communications Department to do photography work. She heard about the opportunity from her father, who works there as a graphic artist. She hopes that this experience will be educational and help open the doors to college and career opportunities.

“It’s a great opportunity for me to do an internship before I get into college so I have some experience in the working world. I want to be able to say I have had prior experiences and it’s just a great idea for me!” said Alexa.
