Imagine free massages, food within reach (no farther than 150 feet), and up to three months of paid leave to pursue personal interests. These opportunities are more than just a dream; they are real benefits for Google employees.

The company is known for its lavish benefits, which extend well beyond the ones listed above. Included in the Mountain View California site are break rooms, free breakfast and lunch in over 25 cafes, and a constantly staffed concierge service. These may sound like employee perks that could only appear in a work of fiction. In fact, one movie does illustrate, in comedic manner, the unique Google approach to employment.

The Internship, directed by Shawn Levy, is a comedy released in 2013. It follows the hilarious and unrealistic adventures of prospective Google employees who must complete ridiculous and unorthodox ‘initiations’ as interns of the company.

While Billy McMahon and Nick Campbell (played by Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson) are unlikely characters used for comedic effect, many of the exaggerated and upbeat ways that Google is presented might leave viewers wondering what is fact and what is fiction?

Amber (Standifer) Bloomfield, 1998 graduate and  daughter of principal’s secretary Mrs. Lee Standifer, is a Google employee currently stationed in London.  The work that Bloomfield does is far from the traditional nine to five office experience.

Bloomfield refers to herself as “Culture Guru,”  planning trips and events to promote “Google Culture.”

Google’s philosophy is that when employees are their happiest, they do their best work.

“Google culture is extremely important  in this competitive tech industry. Google culture is built around fun, creation, and innovation,” Bloomfield says.

Standifer says, “She [Amber] works with very happy people. Why wouldn’t they be happy?”

Bloomfield has planned events to destinations like Waikiki, Hawaii; Disneyland, Paris; and beaches in California. Activities range from low key cinema outings to roller discos.

Bloomfield’s job requires a lot of work, as taking up to 800 people on an off-site trip  is difficult, but she does not have complaints regarding her workload.

Standifer knows that even though her daughter does lots of hard work, the tasks that she completes benefit the company as a whole. “She does a lot of team building, basically. Her job is to keep morale up.”

“We do crazy fun things all the time–the sky is your limit!” says Bloomfield.

The Internship doe,s in fact, exaggerate a lot about Google, mostly through the misfortune of fictional characters, but Bloomfield agrees that the Google Culture does inspire the myths.

Another aspect that many remember about Google is its endless supply of food. In addition to restaurants, they provide a coffee bar where employees order any sort of coffee for free.

Besides the free food, Google takes into account employees’  dietary requirements, and the company is willing to cater to the nutritional needs of a single employee. Bloomfield’s diet is gluten free. Google provides meals that match her needs, at no extra cost to her.

Despite these wonderful benefits, being an employee at the tech giant is more than just fun and games. The people who work at Google are expected to work hard. A senior executive from Airbus Defense and Space who helped negotiate a multi-year contract to supply satellite imagery for Google Maps, commented on the work ethic of the employees.

“The team at Google was focused on the experience of their userbase. I found them very intelligent, motivated, and looking to find ways to create a better world through the everyday actions of Google interface,” he said.

The dedication that the employees possess may just be the key to Google’s success, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have fun.

Bloomfield says “I feel incredibly fortunate to work  for a company like Google that really cares about fostering an amazing corporate culture, and also rewarding their employees for all of their hard work. I wouldn’t trade my job for anything else!!”
