This is the fourth story in Lancer Media’s Summer Series: Most Likely to… These feature stories highlight students who are becoming role models of Lancer Spirit.

Almost every girl dreams of being a princess. One was able to harness her love of sailing into making this dream a reality–junior Deirdre (Dee Dee) Dolan. She is princess of the Maryland Yacht Club, has lived on a boat, and is the captain of the marching band’s color guard.

And no, she hasn’t actually sailed around the world… yet.  She has, however, sailed to Florida and lived on on her family’s boat for seven months. Dee Dee is a member of the Maryland Yacht Club and was elected princess of the club  in 2013. She helps out at a sailing camp, instructing others in her first love, sailing.

Dee Dee wants to focus her knowledge of sailing and marine life to build a career in marine biology. This year Dee Dee worked hard on her campaign for Queen of the Chesapeake, a title that encompasses all of the Chesapeake yacht clubs, finishing in the top five of the race.

She volunteers by growing oysters for the Rock Creek reef restoration project. This year, when Dee Dee collected her oysters, she had collected 37 bushels for the reef. Dee Dee also teaches sailing and volunteers with the Maryland Casa.

Dee Dee is an accomplished participant in the performing arts. She has played roles in the drama productions, received two leadership awards for band (one in sophomore year and one in junior year) and became captain of the color guard.

Assistant color guard instructor Emma Burke said, “Dee Dee is really fun and hard-working. She never lets things outside of guard distract her, and she is always willing to help someone in guard who needs it. None of the new people feel out of place because she’s really nice and welcoming, which is good because jumping into a big program like the marching band would be kind of intimidating if the captains acted like they were above you, which she doesn’t. Even though she’s involved in a lot and obviously busy, she is dedicated and puts her heart into all she does.”

Dee Dee is an avid member of Mr. Lazarus’s theatre department, having participated in every drama production, as well as two shows with the Advanced Theatre Production class. Students in that class create a show that is entirely their own, collaboratively writing, producing, directing and starring in the shows.

Because of her involvements in theatre and color guard, Dee Dee says that the one place in the school that she could spend an entire day is the performing arts wing of the school. In this wing she has many of her friends, the theatre department and all of the color guard. “It has everything!” says Dee Dee.

She was nominated for recognition by Mrs. Marga Doughty for accomplishments in Spanish class, just one of her classes that she says has taught her people skills and leadership skills.

With all Dee Dee’s activities, including color guard, Mu Alpha Theta, Drama Honor Society, her yacht club and National English Honor Society, it’s a wonder she’s got time for it all and can still manage to be a kind, caring, hardworking person. She embodies the characteristics of a true Lancer.
