From Halloween to Christmas: When do we give thanks?

While searching for the perfect Halloween costume, shoppers bump into rows of ornaments, candy canes and fake Christmas trees. Is Thanksgiving ever on display?

You may see houses with Christmas lights on the trees, around the house and a Christmas tree in the window, but it’s not even Thanksgiving. What’s up with that?

Thanksgiving is an amazing holiday where we get to be thankful for everything we have. It is also a time where families sit down together and enjoy a great meal. Thanksgiving is unique to the United States.

Thanksgiving should be given its day. How do we get others to stop early Christmas?

“I think it’s a person’s choice when to celebrate. We don’t know the reasons behind their celebrations being too early. I think it bothers most people because Christmas is the celebration of Jesus’s birth, so why wouldn’t people celebrate it on his birthday,” junior Mary Thoen said.

Christmas decorations have been increasing after Halloween, but where is the Thanksgiving spirit? People forget about Thanksgiving because they are too worried about Christmas shopping. Local stores have jumped into selling their Christmas merchandise, but they should wait for the appropriate time, after Thanksgiving. Stores are trying to take advantage that Christmas is not far from now and selling everything early but they are taking away from the joy of Thanksgiving. It’s a holiday, too.

“Stores should wait until after Thanksgiving until they put Christmas decorations because Thanksgiving deserves its holiday and shouldn’t be taken away because it’s Thanksgiving. Also I think people have lost the true meaning of Christmas, not because of when we celebrate it, but because of the morals and greediness of people in this generation,” Thoen added.

Black Friday is taking the ‘thanks’ out of Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is the holiday of endless food, football games, sitting by the fire, and eating pumpkin pie. It is spending time with your family and the ones you love and remembering how blessed you are. That is what it’s all about, right? But let’s not forget what comes after Thanksgiving, or even late Thanksgiving night — Black Friday.

I never realized how crazy people can get on Black Friday until I went the past couple of years.

Everyone wants the newest trends, the best deals, the most recent technology or anything they think is, “one heck of a deal.” However, some people go too far to succeed in their Black Friday goals and one rising problem we may have is stores keep opening earlier and earlier each year.

Obviously, they want to one-up each other, but when is enough, enough? Black Friday day of shopping is ruining Thanksgiving. Stores opening at 8 p.m. on Thursday or people get in line starting at 6 p.m.: what about the family dinner? The merchandise and products will always still be there. Even the day after Black Friday the “deals” people are getting are not even far from the original price. We live in a consumer world where people are obsessed with buying and purchasing.

“I guess you could say people get really excited for the holiday season to start, so Black Friday is a big deal. Most people think it’s like its own holiday. I think people lose the true meaning of Christmas because of this,” junior Neal Roberts said.

“I think it is okay to celebrate Christmas after Thanksgiving because that’s a lot to celebrate two holidays at once. It doesn’t make sense, but I don’t have a problem with people celebrating Christmas too early,” Roberts added. Here’s what I want for Christmas.

Stores should not put up their Christmas decorations until after Thanksgiving. Nordstrom department stores waits until after Thanksgiving to decorate for the holidays. A company boasts that they like to celebrate one holiday at a time and their customers appreciate them waiting to turn their stores into a winter wonderland.

Stores should be closed on Thanksgiving. It’s not okay to take away someone’s Thanksgiving with their family to be forced to work. Wal-Mart workers protested against working on Thanksgiving. It is a national holiday, even for people who have low wage jobs. In a press conference held by members of Organization United for Respect at Wal-Mart (or OUR Wal-Mart), it was announced that workers and supporters would protest at 1,500 Wal-Mart locations across the country, in what is “set to be one of the largest mobilizations of working families in American history.”

Protesters called for improved labor standards, such as providing employees with more full-time work to make at least $25,000 a year. These protests stem from Black Friday last year, when many Wal-Mart managers threatened and discouraged workers from going on legally protected strikes, as well as the firing of more than 100 Wal-Mart employees for protesting the company’s shareholder meeting in Bentonville, Ark this past June.

Finally, Christmas music should be played after Thanksgiving. Personally, I start listening to Christmas music after Thanksgiving. Not on a daily basis, but I’ll start listening to Christmas Pandora stations when I work on homework or clean my room.

It’s your opinion if you like to celebrate Christmas early or after Thanksgiving, but don’t forget that every holiday is special. It is important to be able to be around family and to be thankful for everything we have and to give to people that need it most.
