September is homecoming month at Linganore High School (LHS), a time full of excitement, traditions and activities that bring spirit to the whole schoolSpirit week took place between September 22 to 26. Each day had a different theme and students could win points for their grade by participating, which would help them obtain the spirit stick. The themes were: red black and bow, class color day Freshman-red Sophomore-blue Junior-yellow Senior- tie die, crazy hat and hair day, and polka dot and stripes.
“I think all of the school spirit brings the school together,” said junior Nick Tressler. “It’s fun to see everyone in the school at the pep rally too.”
The highlight of the week was on September 26, when the whole school gathered during first period in the main gym, for the pep rally. The event had performances from both the JV and Varsity cheer teams and the poms team also performed as well. Both the cheer and dance teams practice and work very hard, and it showed in their performances.
Along with the showcase from the three teams, there was also a ball toss game where students that were selected were able to throw the ball into their partners’ huge pants. The Class of 2029 ended up winning the whole game. At the end of the pep rally there was a contest to see which class was the loudest, had the most spirit and who had the ability to work as a team.
“My favorite part was probably the game that they played,” said junior Charlie Glassman.
While staff and students do think the games played are fun, they also believe there should be more.
“ I enjoyed watching students perform, and I think that they should play more games,” said IED teacher Kirk.
At the end of the pep rally, the long awaited winner of the spirit stick was announced. In first place, class of 2026, second 2027, and in third 2029. However, it was the senior class that reigned supreme, winning the spirit stick.
The excitement of spirit week and homecoming week carried on into Friday night, when the football team faced off against Walkersville High School. The theme was neon out, due to the Homecoming Dance theme being neon, and Linganore beat Walkersville in a shutout.
Spirit week at LHS is more than just silly hats, class colors and dancing. It is about creating memories that will last a lifetime for these students and teachers. From the school spirit all the way to the football game, all of these activities reminded everyone of their school pride.
As the week came to an end, one thing was for certain: spirit week is tradition at Linganore and it would not be complete without the teachers, students, athletes and everyone who was involved.
