Lancer Media Kitchen: How to make bulgogi(불고기)

by Joe Ham, Reporter

Bulgogi (불고기) is a Korean cuisine with a beef meat base and sauce. The name means fire (bul불) meat (gogi고기) because it is beef grilled on a stove. I have always been around this dish growing up and it quickly became my favorite. Anyone can master this, even on the first try.

The only tools you will need include a knife, mixing bowl, and pan/wok. The ingredients are very simple, and you can get most of them from any grocery store:

  1. half of an onion
  2. ground garlic (1 tbsp)
  3. soy sauce (7-10 tbsp)
  4. 1 pound thinly sliced ribeye
  5. fresh crushed pineapple(or pineapple pieces) (~2 1/2 tbsp)
  6. sliced green onion (3 stems)
  7. sugar (3 tbsp)
  8. optional: sesame seeds or sesame oil (2 tbsp)

The pineapple will be used to tenderize the meat with the enzymes present in them. Because of this, the pineapple has to be natural and not canned. If you can’t find crushed pineapples in the fresh fruits section, crushing them manually will work, too.
