Dear Santa Week brings people together through the timeless tradition of writing letters to Santa Claus.
Dear Santa Week is celebrated during the second week of November, marking the official start of the holiday season. This is the perfect time because it sets a festive tone for the month ahead and gives enough time for the letters to reach Santa.
The event originated as a way to keep alive one of the most beloved holiday customs, sending letters filled with wishes and dreams to the North Pole. Over the years, it has grown into a celebration that not only honors childhood wonder but also inspires generations to keep the tradition alive.
During this week, children and adults write heartfelt letters to Santa. Many schools and communities also use this time collecting letters to spread kindness and collect gifts for those in need.
In addition, some programs partner with charities to ensure that every letter helps make someone’s Christmas brighter, turning words on paper into reality.
“Santa Letter Week reminds me of the joy of believing, the value of generosity, and the warmth of connecting with others during the holiday season,” Linganore High School (LHS) junior Hunter Gouge said. “In a world that moves too fast, this week invites people to pause and reflect on what truly matters.”
Gouge believes that an event such as this has the capability to teach children about the power of giving and remind adults to appreciate the little things that make the season special.
“To me, it’s a fun tradition that reminds people to slow down and enjoy the holiday season. Writing a letter to Santa brings back that childhood excitement we all had,” Gouge said.
Fellow student Joe Stefula agrees with Gouge.
“Honestly, it helps keep the magic alive,” Stefula said. “Even teenagers like myself end up smiling while writing the letters, remembering the wonder and belief in something magical. That feeling doesn’t go away; you just forget about it until something like this brings it back.”
In the end, Dear Santa Letter Week is about keeping the spirit of Christmas and holidays alive, one hopeful letter at a time.
