On January 8, the pom and dance team performed at their first girl’s varsity basketball game against Tuscarora.

This was unusual because in the winter, the team practices for competitions, but this opportunity gave the pom and dance more experience in front of a large crowd. The routine was the same 2.5 minute routine as the one they did at the pep rally for homecoming.

The routine included featured formations like the caterpillar, kick line and Russian into splits.

“Performing at the basketball game was really fun because it is something that I have never done with the team. I am very excited to start our competition season,” said sophomore, Ashley Nash.

At the competitions, they are doing a Short Pom, Total Package, Lyrical, and Jazz. The short pom routine is similar to the routine they do at halftime, but with more technical skills like turns, leaps, and jumps. Their total package dance is a four-minute dance that has sections of pom, kick, hip-hop, jazz, and lyrical. Total package can also be called Long Pom.

The captain for each dance gets judged separately and the captains are CiCi Emerson, Kaley Hennon, Cailey Webber, and Emily Shumate.

They perform at two more basketball game, January 22 and February 20. The next competitions are January 26 at Marriotts Ridge High School @12, March 2 at Gwynn Park @12, and States on March 16.

They practice every day after school in the cafeteria for their competions.
