The indoor color guard of the 2016 season is in full swing. They have not only been practicing for their competitions, but also in the class for Marching Band Front, they created their own small group and individual shows. The guard is taking a look into the eyes of a color guard instructor.

The groups are choosing their music, writing drill, writing and choreographing their work, and budgeting for the necessities of their show. This includes costumes, silks, flag poles, sabers, rifles, a mat and paint for the mat (none of these are actually purchased).

“I like seeing other people’s shows because it shows me how much they have grown as a performer. It makes me proud of them,” says Melissa Darling, junior co-captain of the color guard.

Students have been working most of second term. They created a concept of their show,  a Power Point of the budgeting, the looks included in the show, and the story of the show. Then, they created a drill pattern. Drill is the movements of the show, where the individuals will move throughout the performance. Then they choreograph the work. They have the options of dancing and spinning flags, sabres and rifles. They can use all equipment, or they can chose one piece of equipment.

Everything created for their shows was presented to Mr. Kevin Lloyd, the director of band and color guard.

Instructor Will Hernandez leads after school practice on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The first competition will be February 6th.
