Katie Lamb: Most likely to . . . be featured in MoMA

This is the sixth story in Lancer Media’s 2015 Summer Series: Most Likely to…

These feature stories highlight rising seniors who are becoming role models of Lancer Spirit.

When children are little, they all seem to have the same interests: playing outside, getting dirty, and coloring outside the lines in their coloring books. Rising senior Katie Lamb never grew out of that hobby of coloring. To this day, she still does incredible artwork in and outside of school.

For birthdays and Christmas as a little girl, Katie would not ask for Barbie dolls: she would ask for art supplies.

“I realized my talent for art when I was young, so it’s just something I’ve continued to do,” says Lamb.

Katie was not the only one who noticed her potential.

“Katie has always liked drawing. It was apparent very early on. She would draw on everything, including furniture,” says Katie’s mom.

Not only does Katie paint on a canvas, but she repainted a snowboard last winter, which happens to be her mother’s favorite piece so far.

Lamb has taken Art I, II, III, and is currently enrolled in the AP studio art program. Katie can create many forms of art beautifully but says painting is her favorite.

Katie placed third in both the Frederick Women’s Civic Club art contest then third again when the contest winners went to compete regionally in the Western Maryland Division. After that, she went on to state competition and took second place overall in the Women’s Civic Youth Art Contest. Many of Katie’s pieces have also been chosen to be in the Linganore community show held every year. She has represented the Linganore Art Department well with awards ranging from 1st to 3rd, leading to cash prizes.

“She is very gifted in Drawing and Painting,” says art teacher Mrs. Georgia Geisser.

Not only does Katie’s artwork impress her teachers. Her friends love her work.  “Katie offered to design our group of friends class color t-shirts. I guess she got side-tracked and forgot but stayed up till 4a.m. to get them finished. If that’s not dedication, I don’t know what is,” says Elizabeth Coletti.

When you first see Katie she does does come across as the stereotypical Bohemian artist-type.

“It’s not something you would expect from Katie, but she’s amazing at what she does,” says Kiley Cross.

Katie has a love for soccer but hopes to attend a university based on her skills in art. In her AP class she will be producing a college-level artist portfolio of approximately 22 drawings and paintings that will be sent to the College Board to be judged so she can earn college credit her senior year.

“Katie is simply a remarkable young artist.  Katie’s level of skill set and confidence is readily present with the art work that she produces.  Her technical rendering, especially with color pencils, is just astounding, with layer after layer of color to build the perfect composition,” says art teacher  Mr. Christian Madenspacher.
