Linganore High School (LHS) offers a variety of sports to give students opportunities to express themselves. Basketball and football are two of these favorite sports at Linganore.
The LHS Mini Hoop league stemmed from a simple argument of who was better at basketball in social studies teacher Jeb Beaver’s AP Macroeconomics.
LHS senior Caden Vogel decided to turn this hoop into a real event for Linganore. Vogel made an Instagram account and Youtube channel. He did it to grow the audience and help build something people would all remember about Linganore.
Vogel allowed people to DM him and register their own teams to participate. After a successful first year with the LHS mini hoop account gaining over 450 followers. Vogel decided to bring the league back in his senior year for season 2.
Season 2 instantly attracted attention from former teams and other students from all grades at LHS.
“If I let every team who wanted to play play, we would have over 20 teams total,” Vogel said.
LHS Mini hoop, as the league came to be known, dedicated their league to a good cause, partnering with St. Jude’s research and opening a donation link on all of their social media. In season 1, the league raised $440.
This year, Vogel decided to bring back the opportunity for students, staff, and mini hoop members to donate to a good cause. He decided to partner with the wounded warrior project. So far they are up to just about $100 raised for the cause.
The word got around, and Linganore teachers and staff members heard about the league. Teachers like Joesph Hawkins, Linganore staff member, are actively engaged on the instagram account and comment on game time posts and final scores.
Even Dr. Michael Dillman, Linganores principal, shouted out the instagram account on the morning announcements, reiterating that students should watch the videos and donate to the cause.
Vogel puts countless hours a week into LHS mini hoops. Between the stat keeping, graphics and recording, it’s a lot more work to keep up with than most people think.
“It’s a good representation of students coming together and doing something they all enjoy for a good cause,” said Gio Angulo.
From an idea to reality, LHS Mini Hoop is really a good example of people turning something fun, into something that supports good causes.

Awesome accomplishment, Cade and friends. To think of others than yourselves is what America is truly about. You are carrying the torch forward to help others who need a hand up. JFK would be so proud.
