In this podcast, Mallory Mills talked to Linganore High school students about their opinions on the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays and which they prefer.
Mills first talked to sisters Savanna, a sophomore, and Lily Falcione, a freshman. They both reported to enjoy Christmas more than Thanksgiving.
Secondly, Mills talked to junior Carlee Bernard. She disagreed with the Falciones’ assessment. She prefers Thanksgiving to Christmas.
While the opinions of the three students interviewed were very different, they focused on some similar aspects of the two holidays. Like many teenagers, they enjoy Christmas and Thanksgiving because they get to spend time with their families, eat delicious food and receive gifts.
Mallory Mills Lily Falcione explained that she prefers Christmas because, in her words, “I really like the kind of music that they play, and it’s [Christmastime] like one of the happiest periods of my life.”
Another highlight came from Savanna Falcione when she discussed one of her favorite holiday traditions.
“My Grandma makes pumpkin pie, and we all go out and help decorate it,” Savanna Falcione said. “[For] Christmas, we take a night and we decorate our Christmas tree. Also, the morning where we get to open presents [is also a highlight].”
Bernard explained why she prefers Thanksgiving over Christmas.
“I feel like it brings my family together,” Bernard said.
She believes there is a different focus with the Thanksgiving holiday, whereas other get-togethers might focus on gifts.
In another moment, Bernard explained she thinks people tend to enjoy Christmas more than Thanksgiving because of “the gifts” and that “a lot of people like presents and the idea of having something [a holiday] for that.”
At the end of the podcast, Mills recommended listeners do not overlook “the holiday that may seem more boring than the other, because many people might value that holiday more than you might think they do.”
