Linganore’s Boys Indoor Track & Field Team had their third meet of the season this past weekend and looked extremely strong. They placed high in many races and brought a lot of positive attention to Linganore’s Track & Field program.
The Howard County Winterfest Invitational is one of the biggest meets in our area with more than 60 schools competing.
The meet took place on Saturday December 13th at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex in Summerfield, Maryland. The meet included many public schools as well as prominent private schools like Gonzaga College High School, Bishop McNamara and St. John’s College High School. Since this was a Varsity only meet, Linganore only had 6 runners at the PG Complex.
Class of 2026: Quinton Dodds & Ricky Johnson
Class of 2027: Jacob Araujo, Brandon Rosario, Kayden Harris, Jake Brown
The meet started with the shortest race in all of track, the 55m. This race is extremely action-packed but also extremely short. Linganore senior Quinton Dodds placed 9th out of 112 runners with a time of 6.63 seconds, only 0.2 of a second behind first place. In such a short race as this, the slimmest of margins is the difference between 1st and 9th place.
The next event was the 300m race. An indoor track is approximately ¾ of an outdoor track, and this race is a lap and a half. Junior Jake Brown ran this race for Linganore and placed 3rd overall, finishing with a time of 35.5 seconds, a school record.
When asked what these school records mean to him Brown responded, “I mean, school records are one thing,” Brown said. “[But,]I mostly care about winning, and I think we might have a shot at winning the States this year.”
The 500m race was very similar to the 300 for Linganore. Brown placed 3rd with a time of 1:06.84 and posted another school record. While he believes it is nice to earn personal records (PR) or school records, Brown thinks this also puts a target on his back from other 500m 3A school runners in the state.
Other notable finishes for Linganore were Class of 2027 Jacob Araujo placing 11th in the 800m, Class of 2027 Kayden Harris placing 8th in the 1600m, and Ricky Johnson placing 4th in the High Jump.
The real highlight of the meet, however, was Linganore’s 4x200m race. The race started off strong withLinganore’s Quinton Dodds got out to a quick lead over the other competitors in the heat. Brown expanded this lead through the second leg as he passed the baton to senior Ricky Johnson. Johnson maintained Linganore’s lead into the last leg of the race and handed the baton to junior Brandon Rosario. Rosario finished the race strong, running all the way through the finish line to give Linganore a final time of 1:32.35.
The Lancers placed 1st in the meet. This time also gave them the number 1 spot in all of Maryland in 3A public schools and 3rd place when you throw in private schools.
All in all, the Howard County Winterfest meet showed Linganore’s Track & Field program may not only be slept on, but one of the best in the state.
