On Wednesday, February 5, Linganore High School (LHS) hosted a signing day for senior athletes to commit to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level.
Aiden McGovern is a senior athlete at Linganore, who is signing to Howard Community College (HCC) to continue his lacrosse career.
McGovern shared his goals for his time at HCC.
“[I want to] do my two years, focus on my grades and try to transfer and further my education,” McGovern said.
Linganore varsity boys’ lacrosse coach Thompson shared more about McGovern’s prospects.
“He really didn’t get a whole lot of opportunity last year, but we’ve been working really hard, he’s gotten a lot of good looks from colleges,” Thompson said.
According to McGovern’s mother, Stephanie McGovern, “finding the balance between grades, staying on top of schoolwork and working hard off the field too” were some of the challenges her son faced during his participation in the sport.
As McGovern heads to college, he is ready to balance his sport and school life by implementing the same routine that has worked for him throughout high school, which strongly relies on time management.
“After practice, I’ll take 30 minutes to study and do some homework, and then I always start off my morning with at least like a refresher for school,” McGovern said.
McGovern has enjoyed a strong support system during his time as a player at Linganore.
“Honestly, I would say either my dad or my best friend Camden Copek
[have been my biggest supporters],” McGovern said.
McGovern’s family has been a big part of his lacrosse career. His mom, Stephanie McGovern, said that she has continued to support her son by“kind of letting him lead the way in what he thought was best and just helping guide him and answer questions.”
One of Stephanie McGovern’s memorable moments of her son’s time playing lacrosse is reflecting on each game with him and discussing the team’s performance.
For Aiden McGovern, one highlight of his lacrosse career at Linganore was a great contribution to a game his sophomore year.
In a game against Oakdale High School, McGovern said, “the game was already suspenseful, and I just had this full-field throw to one of my teammates, and we scored; and it was probably one of the best moments that we’ve had.”
