Lancer Spotlight: Prom being held on a Friday raises concern for student plans

This year, Linganore High School’s (LHS) prom falls on Friday May 10, and will be held at the Frederick Fairgounds. This is an unusual occurrence for LHS, since their prom is usually held on a Saturday. This year, the LHS prom was planned, organized, and decorated by the Class of 2025 student council.

When first learning prom would be on a Friday, many students were not on board with the idea. Typically when prom is on a Saturday, people tend to make plans that last from early in the morning to late in the evening, so the concept of Friday prom it put a hold on everyone’s plans for that day.

2025 Class President Josslyn Quansah explained her thoughts on the schedule and how people around her reacted to the news.

“When I first found out prom would be on a Friday, I immediately asked why,” Quansah said. “It was a lot of why from a lot of people, and some frustration.”

When students learned that prom this year would be held on a Friday this year, it raised a lot of questions and concerns about what the day would look with classes and preparation for the important school event.

LHS Literacy Specialist Tracy Cassidy explained why prom falls on a Friday this year.

“Administrators had been talking and came to me saying, ‘Hey maybe you could think about moving [prom] to a Friday, because we sometimes have a hard time getting chaperones on Saturdays.’ Then I had people saying that it would work better for them to chaperone on a Friday, so that’s how it came to be”.

After the date was officially announced, many people were planning to skip school that day so their plans could stay as they were before.

When early release prom forms were distributed, there was an option to be excused to leave early after PREP on May 10. This decreased student frustration because they could go home, get ready, and continue with their original plans.

“I think being excused makes the day way less stressful since students may have appointments and things to go to beforehand,” Quansah explained.

Although there are mixed opinions, many students are glad they are not required to be at school the full day and can easily adjust the plans they once had.
