On September 27, Linganore High School (LHS) held its annual Homecoming Pep Rally. Students came together in the gymnasium to celebrate the Homecoming events, as well as cheer on teams and performers.
During the rally, Student Government Association (SGA) advisor Jeremy Brown recognized LHS fall sports for various accomplishments. These announcements were followed by several student performances.
The multiple student performances included JV and varsity cheer, pom and dance, band and color guard. All of these performers showed off their talents and excited the crowd.
The rally was one event during Linganore’s Homecoming spirit week. Each graduating class competed throughout the week to earn points to win the spirit stick. These points could be acquired from the Homecoming parade on September 21, hill painting on September 22, class banners and spirit wear throughout the week.
The most competitive aspect of spirit week is how students show their school spirit during dress days throughout the school week. Each day was assigned a specific theme, and students were responsible for coordinating their outfits with the themes to earn points. These points were tallied by teachers in their Block 1 classes and submitted to Brown.
At the rally, it was announced that the Class of 2025 won the spirit stick, overtaking the other classes during “Red, Black, and Bow Day.” Each bow counted as one point, and the seniors are traditionally gifted the “bow dress” and “bow suit” to win each year.
This year, selected staff and students played a competitive game of “Duck, duck, goose.” Social Studies teacher Zackary Yurich won the game by being one of the last two teachers standing. Yurich and Physical Ed teacher Christina Moats raced towards the spirit stick at the end of the game to decide who was the final winner.
Selected students from each graduating class also played a game called “Head, shoulders, knees, and cup.” In this game, a plastic cup was placed in between two students, they were eliminated based on their reaction time of grabbing the cup when told. Senior Kayleigh Lake was the last student left in the game, making the Class of 2025 the winners.
Brown also announced the Homecoming nominees in each graduating class. This allowed students’ to cheer on their peers and wonder who will win Homecoming royalty. During the football game Friday night, it was revealed that seniors Sierra Howell and John Mills got the most votes within the senior court and won Homecoming King and Queen.
Sophomore class president Sydney Hall felt that this pep rally was really exciting and spirited for everyone involved. She thought that overall it was very fun, and she wishes LHS held pep rallies more often.
“I feel like the spirit was definitely up,” Hall said. “I just think it was really fun. The games were really fun too, and I feel like we should have these more often.”
Senior Josslyn Quansah has always loved pep rallies and seeing everyone’s competitive spirit. As SGA President, she enjoys it in a different way than she used to, since she is now involved in the planning and organization of the event.
“I enjoy the pep rally overall because it fosters a lot of school spirit and encourages people to get more involved in the school and in sports events,” Quansah said.
Overall, students were excited to attend the Pep Rally and use this opportunity to come together as a school community. This Pep Rally created exhilaration in the lead up to Friday night’s Homecoming football game against Oakdale High School (OHS) and the Homecoming dance on Saturday night.
Lancer Media issues a big “congratulations” to all fall athletes recognized and an “amazing job” to all of the performers!
