During the week of December 11, the Linganore (LHS) drama department held auditions for the spring musical, “Shrek.” There were three days of auditions, with the first day being for acting, the second singing and the third dancing.
The musical was announced last year at the drama banquet after the choices were narrowed down using a mock March Madness bracket.
On Friday, December 15, the cast list was released. The first rehearsal was held the following Monday, where the entire main cast and ensemble met to read through the entire script for the first time.
For the next four and a half months, the cast will rehearse every single day after school to learn their lines, songs and scenes.
Senior Finn Martinez was casted as Pinnochio in the musical. His character is a nervous wooden puppet, modeled after the famous children’s story, who befriends Shrek and Donkey during the duration of the show. He reported that his favorite part of rehearsing so far has been the comradery.
“I’m excited to be working with new people and new actors,” said Martinez. “I love that we get to share the experience together.”
The first tech crew rehearsal was also held on December 15. The tech crew will meet every Friday until the drama department holds tech week in April. In order to prepare for the show, the crew builds set pieces, creates and manages props, and designs lighting and sound cues to be used during the full production.
Daelyn Reid is a senior and participates in the construction aspect of the tech crew. She reported that she is excited to get started with tech rehearsals for the spring musical.
“My favorite part of being in the tech crew is painting the set pieces and running the show,” said Reid. “I love working with other people to build the set and make the show great.”
“Shrek” will run from April 19 to April 21 in the LHS auditorium. Stay tuned for news regarding the musical and ticket sales.
