Shortstop Garrett Schwartzbeck, signed his National Letter of Intent to play baseball at Elizabethtown College. Schwartzbeck has played varsity baseball since freshman year. With a batting average .307, he has been a key player for the Lancers.

Schwartzbeck started with tee-ball. He has always strived to become a collegiate athlete like his dad, Mitch Schwartzbeck. Garrett’s club team Mt Airy Legion, Post 191, has given him the skills to do just that. “My club team definitely prepared me for traveling as well as a full commitment to baseball. Pitching is better at a college level so I am going to struggle a little bit at first and my batting average will definitely lower,” said Garrett.

Ryan Staley has coached Schwartzbeck for the last four years on his club team. He said, “I think the best part coaching Garrett is his overall passion and energy for the sport of baseball, He shows up to practice every day ready to work hard and that’s definitely the best part of coaching Garrett.”

Garrett has had many offers. “I had about 7 to 8 other options. Most of them were big-city schools, and, personally, I like the middle of nowhere schools better. What appealed to me the most was how nice the town was as well as how enthusiastic the coaching staff is,” Garrett said.

Garrett has had his eyes set on Elizabethtown since he was a junior. “Garrett’s choice has been a very easy-going process. He got in contact with the baseball coach[Sheibley] last May, then visited Elizabethtown with his grandparents shortly after. Garrett feels this his best choice, and I think it’s a great fit for him,” said Garrett’s mom Erin Schwartzbeck.

Last year the Blue Jays were 14-26 in the LandMark Conference.

What jump-started the school looking at him was during a playoff game last season when former Lancer and current Elizabethtown junior Michael Rajnik took a video of Garrett playing and sent it to his coaches. Ever since then, Garrett has been on Elizabethtown’s radar.

“Garrett’s work ethic, competitiveness, and love for the game aligns with the Elizabethtown baseball culture. Garrett is the type of player who will work hard on the field, in the weight room, and in the classroom to better himself and his teammates,” Rajnik said.

After college Schwartzbeck want to work in construction project management.
