Class of 2018: Boys track and field seniors run through their last 28 days
The Linganore Lancer Track and Field seniors are running through their last 28 days of their high school career. Lars Eklund, Clay Buckman, Spencer Askine, Joe Russo, and Jack DuBro lead the way for the Lancers, who hope to take home the Class 3A State Championship this spring to add to their indoor track state title.
The four boys are captains of their respective events. Jack DuBro is the captain of sprinting events, which consists of the 55-meter dash, the 100-meter dash, and the 200-meter dash. His personal best for the 100 meter is 11.95 seconds. Jack is also a leader in the school, currently residing in the position of Student Government Association President.
Lars Eklund and Clay Buckman are captains for the mid-distance team, which has running events consisting of the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter dash. Lars’ personal record for the 400 meter is a 53.91-second run, while Clay’s is a 51.34-second run. Clay recently won the inaugural Linganore Invitational Meet with 200 and 400-meter times of 23.69 and 51.34 seconds, respectively.
Spencer Askine is captain of the long-distance team, which specializes in the 800 meter, 1600 meter, and 3200 meter runs. Spencer’s personal best for the 1600 meter is a run of 4:54.02 minutes.
Joe Russo captains the throwing team, which holds the events shot put and discus. His best throw for shot put in his career is a distance of 37’7’’ feet. Joe has been the captain of the throwing team since his sophomore year.
While Eklund and Askine are undecided where they will attend for college, Buckman and Russo will attend the University of Maryland in the fall. Jack Dubro will be going out of state to Clemson University.
All five boys were a part of the Linganore Indoor Track team, winning a state championship earlier this winter. Buckman and Askine earned additional honors as part of the state championship cross country team this fall.
Joe will miss his time at Linganore when he leaves at the end of the year. “I will miss my teachers, especially Mr. Hines.”
Other seniors like Jack will miss more than just the teachers. “I’m going to miss the family bond and pride associated with Linganore.”
Reminiscing about their high school career as student-athletes, the seniors advise the underclassmen to not let the time pass them by. “Enjoy and appreciate the time you have as a high schooler,” said Clay.
The Linganore Boys Track and Field team have three more meets until the postseason begins, including a meet this Saturday at Georgetown Prep High School. They hope to follow up their successful indoor track season with a championship in outdoor track as well.
