Oh, the places you’ll go: Garrett Wiehler studies his United Nations passion at American University

Garrett Wiehler will be attending American University at the nation’s capital to study international service.

“American University has one of the top ten International Studies programs, and that’s my passion, so the choice was obvious,” he said.

“I want to be good at helping people and developing lasting solutions to global issues.”

As an editor for The Lance, Wiehler often covered political and global issues that interested him. One of his recent works, “Two movements, one city,” which covered the Women’s March on D.C., was selected as a Best of SNO article.

His interest in international issues continued in his participation of Model United Nations.

“Travelling through the Model United Nations program has really prepared me for the real world.” Wiehler plans to continue participating in Model UN at American University.

In addition to his passion for global issues, Wiehler has also been in multiple school musical and play productions, including the 2017 spring musical, The Addams Family. Wiehler said his favorite memory was when he and his best friend, Lincoln Robisch, conquered the global Destination Imagination improv championship in 2016 and were recognized at the school’s award ceremony.

“I haven’t had to make terribly consequential or difficult decisions at LHS. I’ve followed my brain, and it’s worked so far.”

Wiehler thanks his mother, teachers, and friends. “I feel like I’ve had a really good support network.”
