Every year, Linganore High School (LHS) has an election to join the Student General Assembly Student Council. This year, there are several open positions currently being elected.
The specific positions are for the sophomore and senior classes as well as for the Student Government Association (SGA) as a whole. The positions open for students to vote for are the SGA 2nd Vice President and Treasurer as well as the Class of 2025 vice president, secretary, historian, and the Class of 2027 secretary and treasurer.
SGA President Josslyn Quansah shared how the election is going to work and who is running for each student council position. For SGA treasurer, candidates are junior Casey Kirby and senior Kailyn Nanda. SGA 2nd vice president candidates include: sophomores Nithya Bhitmisetty, Paneel Pothula, Jeremias Romero and Camyn Shipley.
For the class of 2025 vice president, the only person running for that position is Kateryna Omelkevets. For the class of 2027 secretary, the candidates that are running are Colette Riccio and Caitlyn Sivilla. For the treasurer position, the only person who’s running is Megan Webb.
Voting opened on Wednesday October 23 at 2 p.m. and will end today, October 24 at 3 p.m. A QR code has been posted on Schoology which has access to a Google form where students can vote.
The SGA made concerted efforts to ensure students and staff had the opportunity to vote.
“A lot of people didn’t realize when the application came out [to vote] last year, so people missed the deadline,” Quansah said. “And a lot of people were busy this past spring, so this year we pushed out the application to let more people know about the election. More people even joined the clubs, so we can get those positions filled.”
In addition to flyers posted around the building, Linganore Principal Dr. Michael Dillman shared infromation about the election in hi daily announcements. This approach could help encourage more people to vote. It is important that students learn to share their opinion, particularly in this election year.
