On November 8, Emily Purgason signed her National Letter of Intent to continue her academic and athletic career playing soccer at Houghton University.
The recruitment process was a long one for Purgason, as she began her search in her freshman year. She worked on different aspects of her play each year to make sure she was setting herself up for success.
“Freshman year was for broad school research, while sophomore year was for ‘testing the waters’ by diving deeper into the research process in relation to my academic interests (mathematics/actuarial science majors) and going to ID camps,” said Purgason.
While she searched for the perfect fit, Purgason had several things that she knew she needed to find in a college before she committed. She worked hard to take this entire process seriously so that when the time came to make a decision, she would be confident.
“The recruitment process was stressful and time-consuming, as I’m sure it is for all athletes trying to go play in college,” Purgason said. Trying to find the perfect fit for you athletically and academically is difficult and not a decision to take lightly.”
The recruitment process, while exciting, can be stressful for all involved. Purgason’s parents were there to support her through the entire process.
“The recruiting process could be a bit exhausting at times for us,” said Emily Purgason’s mother, Jennifer Purgason. “We started at the end of 9th grade, and it was busy for a while, but by the start of 11th grade she decided that attending a Christian University was a top priority. So, this narrowed down her list significantly, and it wasn’t quite as exhausting.”
The recruitment process was not the only thing Purgason had been working hard on. She had to keep up her skills and training throughout the whole process.
“Emily also has the responsibility as one of our players who serves corner kicks,” said Purgason’s coach, Michael Heller. “Her accurate deliveries from the corner have led to multiple goals this season.” This kind of delivery when it comes to skill does not happen overnight.
Houghton University, where Purgason will soon be heading, is located in New York.
“Being able to go to a place where I am valued and will be able to grow, not only in my faith, but in my sport and academics, is an answer to so many prayers,” Emily Purgason said. “I also know that it is a place that I feel safe/comfortable going to–considering it’s just over five hours away–and that I know I’ll be looked after and loved by my coaches and teammates constantly. It was definitely a perfect fit for me.”
As she moves into this new chapter, Purgason is looking forward to growing in the aspects of life most important to her. According to her mom, “Emily is very passionate about two things: her faith and soccer.”
