“The Lancers are back in action!,” said sophomore Kayleigh Lake, bounding into the locker room after Friday’s game at North Hagerstown High School .

After suffering a 47-46 loss to the Westminster Owls on January 7, their first of the season, many wondered how the Lancers would respond.

The team quickly dispelled any doubts, with aggressive defense and spot-on shooting leading the Lancers to a dominant 78-40 win over North Hagerstown.

Juniors Meg Hummel and Gracie Wilson were offensive forces Friday night, scoring a huge 17 points each. The win was a complete team effort, however, with almost every player scoring at least one basket.

“We all worked as a team,” said junior Trysten Colburn. ”Everyone had to come together and play together[to win].”

Rebounds and steals were key elements to the Lancer victory, allowing for valuable fast-breaks and offensive possessions. Senior Julia Mitchell tallied 12 rebounds, and senior Emma Bowers had 6 steals on the night.

Aside from impressive steals and shots, free throws were another big contributor to the win.

The Lancers shot over 70% at the foul line Friday night, a goal Colburn mentions the team has been working towards for a while.

“We take a lot of time[in practice] to try and get above 70%, and we were able to do that in the game,” Colburn said. “We needed all the points we could get.”

The teamwork of the girls varsity team this year has led them to victory against tough programs like Urbana and Oakdale, both of which have strong records in the Central Maryland Conference.

The victory at North Hagerstown marks the start of the second half of the 2022-2023 season, putting the Lancers back on a winning streak that they hope to carry into the playoffs.

To get there, the team will have to go through the gauntlet, facing the majority of their upcoming opponents for the second time this season.

If Friday night’s game is any indication, the Lady Lancers are more than up to the challenge. They take on the Oakdale Bears at LHS on Monday, a match-up that is sure to be exciting. The JV game will take place at 5:30 and varsity will play at 7.
