Going to the gym could be seen as an intimidating prospect; the powerlifters, the endurance runners, the preworkout pumpers, the tren kens and the leg day warriors. All scary at a first glance, but when you get to know them they can be your biggest supporters, coaches and friends.
People who go to the gym tend to keep to themselves and rarely look around at other patrons. When approached, most gym regulars maintain a friendly demeanor often offering you help with your form or to teaching one how to use a certain piece of equipment.
Everybody has to start somewhere, and gym regular Logan Ezerski was no exception. Starting his journey in middle school, Ezerski has never looked back. He is constantly raising the bar (figuratively and literally) for what it means to be a good patron.
“Everyone is kind-natured and willing to lend a hand,” said Ezerski. “I have not once felt out of place amongst the gym goers.”
According to the New York Times, gym goers are typically positive and understand that everyone has a first day. This ties into the acceptance of new people amongst the regulars. Everyone can relate to someone just starting out, and in their journey they tend to be lenient, friendly and encouraging towards newcomers. Once one gets over one’s initial fears, the routine begins to grow on them if they persist.
Some people have been going to the gym since they were young, such as student and gym goer Edward Slavin. Slavin is a prime example of a veteran gym goer.
“I don’t often interact with people at the gym, but I do know that they’re very friendly,” said Slavin. “The best part is getting to listen to your favorite music while you work out.”
State News’ article on gym intimidation contained an interview with Michigan State Intramural Sports (MSI IM) west employee Alex Villegas, who believes the gym a safe place to get to know people.
Villegas said, “The gym is a good spot to make long term friends because everyone has a similar interest in their health.”
Avid gym goers believe this unifying interest drives everyone to help each other improve. Gym friends can both hold you accountable for your goals and encourage you to set new ones.
People who go to the gym come from all walks of life. Father and IT manager for Playa Hotels, Patrick Simmonds, is not afraid to hit the gym.
“I’ve had great experiences where someone sees that I may or may not know what I’m doing and they help me,” said Simmonds. “I have also found a friend made at the gym can keep you motivated and hold you accountable.”
While they might seem intimidating, most gym goers are more than happy to help you out and support your fitness journey. While it is understandable to be a little reluctant at first, the gym is a great place to socialize, improve oneself and get healthy. The gym and its patrons will grow on you faster than your muscles on the bench press.
