On May 3, the Spanish Honor Society celebrated Cinco de Mayo during PREP. This was the first event organized by the new officers Harry Heitzig, Kyle Bedard, Matthew Strahlman, and Yesenia Montenegro for the 2019-2020 school year.
Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican victory at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Although it is celebrated more in America than Mexico, it is an important part of Mexican culture.
Members of the honor society brought snacks to share with the attendees. Some brought traditional Mexican snacks including guacamole, chips and salsa, mini tacos, and churros.
The German Honor Society was also invited to the event. One of the most important parts of all the language honor societies is having events with more than one honor society attending.
“I really liked gathering with the honor society for a Mexican holiday and getting to enjoy different food and music,” said Valerie Ducos, the junior officer of the Spanish Honor Society.
The Spanish Honor Society focuses a lot on learning more about culture. They host several events throughout the year to watch Spanish movies, celebrate holidays, and analyze literature, and participate in the Albricias contest. One of the main goals of this year is to increase the amount of literature, especially poetry.
