The masks we wear: 9/11 class project reveals the effects of trauma on soldiers

by Beau Cameron, Managing Editor

The 9/11 studies course was approved by the Board of Education in spring 2016, and Mr. Darren Hornbeck taught the course for the first time in the fall of 2016.  The mask project was one part of the class experience.

The class discusses the effects of 9/11 on our modern society and military, the people involved, and even the everyday citizens alive during this event. The event is the turning point of the era– symbolizing the beginning of a new generation and a changed attitude toward the military, global affairs, and our futures.

However, what have these conflicts done to our soldiers? How have they been impacted? What has the struggle with PTSD done to their civilian lives?

The 9/11 class explored these questions in a recent mask making project. Inspired by National Geographic’s article on a similar project, the students recreated the soldiers’ internal struggles through artistic representations.
