English 9 is one of the core classes of freshman year. It involves a lot more reading, reading comprehension, and grammar. As intimating as that may seem, the class can be a breeze as long as you stay on task and listen to Lancer Media’s tips for succeeding in English 9.

What to bring? Next year English students will receive a Chromebook which they will be able to utilize for the class, so it’s expected that you bring it in everyday pre-charged. This will make both you and your teacher a lot happier as you’ll be ready to work without having to wait to charge it. You also want to bring lots of lined paper. English students write a lot, so having a little extra will go a long way. Not only will you have enough for essays, but also quick notes if you don’t have a notebook. Lastly, since pencils and pen seem to mysteriously disappear as the year goes on, make sure to bring plenty (and make sure you get them back after you lend them out).

How much homework to expect? In English 9  the majority of the homework just comes in the form of reading assignments, so as long as you plan out a little time each day to read you’ll be golden. Although some books may seem intimidating, keeping an organized reading schedule, which most teachers provide, will allow you to both keep up with reading and be able to easily track where you are in your book.

What not to do? Make sure you keep all your papers professional and scholarly. Not only will your teachers appreciate the effort and give you full points for your organization, it’s also good practice for future classes and jobs where that will be expected. Make sure to never forget to capitalize, and if you miss a day, not to ask questions such as “Did I miss anything?” or “What are we doing?” Rather a better question to ask would be, “Can I have the assignments I missed?” If you know your teacher has a folder for absent students, just go straight to it and pick up your assignments or look on the Google Classroom. Also make sure to turn in work on time completed to the best of your effort. Some teachers are more relaxed about late work, but most of the time, percentages are knocked off, or the paper is marked as a 0%.

What to look forward to? The class is full of group activities, good novels, and a lot of room for creativity. The class makes many things to help them learn more about English such as movies, art projects, and posters. The class is a great way for students to grow their skills in English, grammar and writing. Be prepared, keep up with your work, and you’ll find yourself truly enjoying the class.
