On September 22, student councils at Linganore High School (LHS) created a large hill painting by spray painting their class designs on a hill overseeing the stadium.
Each year for LHS Homecoming, hill painting has become a tradition to get school spirit to rise in the lead up to the Homecoming football game. Along with many other traditions, each student council comes together to create this artwork. These paintings are made to celebrate Homecoming and the annual Homecoming events: the pep rally, varsity football game, and dance.
Sophomore Hunter Gouge discussed the classes’ hill paintings, floats and the class banner artwork, which was influenced by Linganore’s four A’s: Academics, Accountability, Attitude and Acceptance. All classes’ designs were also inspired by the theme for this school year, CommUnity.
“I think they’re (the hill paintings) important because they inspire school spirit, and they encourage people to learn about Linganore, and to participate in the activities we have to offer,” Gouge said. I think they do raise school spirit overall, and they make students proud to be a part of Linganore.”
There are a lot of details added to these hill paintings, such as the school’s logo which is the arrowhead, spears (that formerly represented the Lancer mascot), and football helmets to represent the varsity football team. Each painting had its own artwork and creative elements.
Class of 2027 council member Anvitha Nakka shared how she thinks the hill painting event] raises school spirit. In addition to school spirit, each class is competing to see which class has the most school spirit and who wins the spirit stick at the pep rally.
“I think it raises competition between the classes and gets us all revved up for homecoming week,” Nakka said.
This was a very exciting event for everyone here at Linganore. These hill paintings are something that everyone gets to look at and feel happy about being a lancer.
