Nothing speaks more of Lancer pride than Friday Night Lights. Kicking off the football season with the first win at home against Wicomico High School. The crowds were out in force to cheer on the Linganore Lancers, leaving standing room only on the home side.
Before the game, the team and coaches reported feeling confident about their skills. Linganore varsity football Coach Rick Conner, who is returning for his 41st season as head coach, is impressed with the performance of his team so far this season.
“We are much farther along than I thought we would be,” Conner said.
The Lancer’s team has only a few returning players from last season. One of the returning players, linebacker Jason Capone (#18), shared his number one goal for the season.
“My goal is to win [the] State Championship; that’s really my only goal,” Capone said.
Defensive tackle Alex Lambert (#55) agrees. His number one goal is to win the State Championship. While this is his first priority, his second goal is to beat the Oakdale Bears.
It appears the Lancers have a single focus in mind for their season.
This year the fierce rivalry against the Oakdale Bears is in full force, the Lancers are focused on bringing the State Championship back to Linganore. Taking home their first victory of the season, the Lancers beat the Indians with a score of (40-12) while Oakdale lost their season opener against Milford Mill (13-41).
Linganore’s Bradley Matthews (#3) led the team with four touchdowns while his teammate Amir Short (#5) scored two touchdowns. There were many notable plays made by athletes including Chase Perry’s (#2) interception with 56 seconds left in the 1st half and Jeffrey Ray’s (#29) interception of Wicomico’s attempt at a two-point conversion in the 4th quarter.
Key tackles were also made by Alex Lambert (#55), Jason Capone (#18) and Collin Doyle (#32), while Logan Thomas (#24) picked up yards when the team needed it.
Players such as Zach Bieritz (#99) believe it is an exciting time to be a Lancer. In his words, the Lancers will “play fast and play hard!”
On September 13, the Lancers will take on the South Carroll Cavaliers for their second game of the season. Fans can purchase tickets here: GoFan
