On November 9, Linganore High School (LHS) senior Cara Morgan hosted her service project supporting Dance for the Cure.
Dance for the Cure is a volunteer based organization that has been able to give money to individuals going through their “breast cancer journey.” Their current mission is to help women who are in financial need while going through treatments.
Morgan’s event was held at LHS in the back parking lot. She invited friends and family to come participate and support the cause with donations.
Morgan is enrolled in the Peer and Community Engagement Experience (PACEE) program at LHS this semester. Each PACEE student is required to design and host a service project based on their passions and interests.
Morgan wanted to be creative with her project and express her love of dance. She has been dancing for eight years and wanted to find a foundation that related to her hobby.
Morgan asked LHS English teacher Randi Kirkland to be her supervisor for this project. Kirkland has always loved bringing people together for good causes, including people outside of the Linganore community, so she was thrilled to help.
“We’ve got some of the girls that are from middle school that Cara works with; uniting them and bringing them here for a common cause, I am always happy about that,” Kirkland said.
Kirkland has known Morgan since she was a freshman in English 9, and she is happy to support her throughout her senior year.
“I love to watch Cara grow because I have had her since she was in ninth grade, and she’s become such a leader,” said Kirkland. “She put this all together, I take no credit.”
As part of her project, Morgan hosted a dance clinic in which she taught everyone a fun and easy Christmas dance to Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” Following the event, participants had a picnic including donuts, fruit and muffins. At the end of the dance, participants were given the opportunity to find a partner and improvise. Each pair performed for the group to see what they came up with.
Senior Katie Haybok was one of the people who participated in the event and came to support Morgan. She thought the event was very fun for all who ended up coming, and she was joyous to donate money to Dance for the Cure.
“This was so much fun, and I think Cara was really creative in planning this event,” said Haybok. “The dance was exciting and easy for the younger girls who came. My favorite part was pairing up to create our own ending of the dance.”
Morgan thought her project worked out better than expected and she was excited that so many people came to her event. She thanked everyone for coming and was shocked with the amount of money she raised for Dance for the Cure.
“Overall, I am very happy how things turned out and we ended up making over two hundred dollars,” said Morgan.
