As the 2023-24 school year concludes, Linganore High School (LHS) students are looking forward to summer break, whether they are going to be working, traveling, going to camps or hanging out with friends, summer offers a plethora of opportunities for high school students as well as much needed rest and relaxation from their academic pursuits.
“This summer, I’m doing a lot of traveling,” said LHS freshman Emma Mobley. “I’m going to South Carolina.
Linganore students shared the variety of ways in which they plan to use their time away from school.
LHS junior Abbygail Myers believes summer provides a good chance to spend time with friends as school commitments wind down.
“One thing on my bucket list is to have a picnic with my friends,” Myers said.
Mobley agreed. “I definitely want to hang out with my friends this summer,” Mobley said.
In an article on LoveToKnow, Sydney Stephens shared a lot of fun activities one can do with friends, “If you’re just hoping to reconnect with your besties this summer, you might be looking for some fun things you can do together while you’re catching up.”
Some of the numerous activities one may enjoy with friends include going to the farmers market, visiting a museum or attending the movies.
Other students use the summer as an opportunity to earn money for a car, college or just going out with friends. LHS freshman Kady Pierce is looking forward to getting a job this summer.
When not planning indoor activities , one may want to take advantage of the warm weather by venturing outside.
Outdoor activities can be a healthy way to stay active and get in your Vitamin D this summer. According to Connections Academy, a K-12 online school provider, “Summer is a great time for students to get outside, explore nature, have fun, and increase their naturalistic intelligence.”
Outdoor activities can include hiking, biking, lying a kite, fishing, berry picking, tubing and many more. One may be interested to try tubing down the Monocacy River with River Island Outfiters.
Traveling is also a beloved summer activity for many students. LHS sophomore Adrianna Howell plans to visit family in Italy this upcoming summer, and Pierce is also going vacationing up north and visiting Niagara Falls.
“That’s fun, because I only see them every four-ish years,” Howell said. “But since it’s my dad’s cousin’s wedding, we’re going right after we went last summer … I love exploring new areas or areas I don’t see that often.”
Some students choose to take on internships over the summer as an opportunity to build career-related skills or network.
This summer, TJ Junior Taylor Johnson accepted an internship at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research.
“In the summer, it will be a full-time job and will continue throughout the school year as [an] unpaid ‘special volunteer status,’ Johnson said. “I’m doing it as part of the physical rehabilitation CTC program I’m in.”
There are many different summer plans among LHS students. What are your summer plans?
