On November 6, Linganore High School (LHS) hosted an induction ceremony for new members of the National English Honor Society (NEHS).
There were 33 new members who joined NEHS this year. To join NEHS, one must be a junior or senior who maintains a high GPA and excels in English.
Once inducted, members of the society complete English-related service hours throughout the year. Members also have the opportunity to participate in activities such as writing contests and pen pal letters.
Alongside the new members, five officers were elected. These officers were seniors Christina Wallace, Cara Morgan, Lily Hanson, Aisiri Prasad and Rachel Ham. Christina Wallace was elected as president of the chapter.
LHS alumni Nicholas Wood was invited to be guest speaker at the ceremony. Wood attended the school in 1966, the first year it opened. As a student, Wood composed LHS’ Alma Mater that is still in use today. He now is a technical writer for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association.
Wood shared his experience at LHS and how the school has changed over the years. Wood said he wrote the Alma Mater as a part of a schoolwide competition while in his sophomore Latin class.
Isabella Tiger, a junior at LHS, said she joined NEHS due to her love of writing and desire to meet different people with similar interests.
When asked about induction, Tiger said, “It was a really good time, the guest speaker was really interesting. He gave a history about Linganore, and that was really interesting to learn about. I learned a bunch of stuff I didn’t know before.
After Wood’s speech, the new officers were sworn in, and the new members were introduced. Each member crossed the stage as their name and a short bio was read.
New members received a certificate and a yellow rose to commemorate the occasion. The officers received bouquets. The floral arrangements were provided by the horticulture class at LHS.
To cap off the event, a group photo was taken on the stairs and refreshments were provided for everyone.
Morgan, the vice president of public relations, said “I am excited for the upcoming year and the plans we have.”
