When looking back at 80’s fashion, we think big hair and neon colors. More and more, fashion trends from the 70’s and 80’s are coming back in fashion today, including jean jackets, scrunchies, cheetah prints, and Converse shoes.

Every girl (and some guys) owns 20+ scrunchies. These thick and bright colored hair ties were popular in the 80’s and recently have made a huge comeback. You’ll see many girls wearing these in their hair and on their wrists. If you see a guy wearing a scrunchie, it most likely means that he has a girlfriend, and she has him literally tied him to her. Really.  It’s a thing!

Hair scarves now are paired with scrunchies. These scarves from the 50’s and the 80’s resurfaced and are worn with ponytails and the half-up half-down hairstyle.

Jean jackets never really went out of style. They can be stylized with pins and patches. Some fashionistas even get super creative and paint designs on the backs. Jean jackets can be expensive. When I bought a jean jacket last year, I thought it was going to be on the less expensive side. But after looking at a few stores I realized the price was close to $100. I found one on Banana Republic for around $60, but this was after it was on sale. The price of these jackets has grown by more than half of what they were in the 80’s. H&M sells jean jackets from $30-$50, and, if you’re lucky, you can find some from Plato’s Closet or Goodwill for cheap.

“Mom jeans” were super stylish in the late 80’s and in the 2000’s. They were worn by middle-aged women and were thought to be untrendy by younger women in the 2000’s. This is how they got their name “Mom Jeans.” These jeans are loose throughout the thigh and can be high-waisted. Many include rips, and the most popular color is the basic blue jean. Shoes to pair these with are Converse and Nike’s Air Force 1. Some people love these jeans, while others don’t like the look and fit.

Boho Bandeaus became popular a couple years ago. They are headbands with many different patterns and can be worn in a variety of styles. They can be worn as a headband, hair-tie, bracelet, and a crop top. There are two different sizes–half and regular. The half ones are better if you want to wear them as a headband. They are a smaller size which works better with most girls’ hair. These headbands are something a hippie from the 70s would wear, and a lot of patterns seem to be based on clothing from 70s style and patterns.

Cheetah prints are fashionable accessories. Cheetah was very popular from the 70’s to 90’s but seemed to fade at the turn of the century because it was too bold.  But cheetah has made a huge comeback. The print can be found on earrings, belts, hair-scarfs, scrunchies, shoes, hats, headbands, pants, shirts, bodysuits, and pajamas.

Converse first opened in 1908, and their first pair was a neutral brown, which is very unattractive. The popular white high top Converse was first introduced in the 1936 Olympics. The red, white, and blue colors were on this shoe to show patriotism. The black came out in 1949.  Converse can be seen in Grease, Rocky, The Breakfast Club, and many other movies. Now they sell 4four different types of shoes the Classic Chuck, Chuck 70, One Star, and Jack Purcell. Converse are paired with jeans or leggings.  

One of the newer trends is tassel earrings, these seemed to come out of nowhere. I fell in love with these earrings, and I just want more. I find a wide variety at Francesca’s and Altar’d State, for around $15. There are many variations to fringe some types are just fringe and others have jewels and then the fringe. There are also some where the fringe is tied around a circle. These earrings come in so many colors.  Earrings that have a lot of fringe and jewels can also be heavy–. I stay away from these because they hurt my ears after wearing them for awhile.

Another new trend is jewelry with stars. Star earrings are a big hit. They come in gold and silver and many different sizes. Some are even hoops with a small star dangling down. There is also star chokers which are very popular.

Although trends from the 80’s are coming back more and more trends from past years will resurface, possibly even trends from the 2000’s. Now we might look at the outfit choice from then and gag, but in ten years we may fall in love.
