Do you love to contemplate every shade of prom dresses?  Are you obsessed with the latest Jimmie Choos?  Do you spend a lot of time figuring out what to wear to school?  If so, join the Fashion Club.

Class of 2021 member Carolina Heister wanted to start a club that would replace the fashion merchandise class that used to be offered. She enlisted the help of Ms. Mary Troxel, English teacher, and began to ask her friends to join the club.

Heister has always been interested in fashion. She was inspired to start a fashion club because she follows the local blog Styled by McKenz. McKenzie Morgan was the president at the club at Damascus High School and now goes to Kent State University.  She is having her come to the club in May, to speak about her blog and how she began in the fashion industry as a high school student. One of her mission was to “share the latest trends at a budget-friendly price point,” said McKenzie.

Heister has many ideas and plans for the new club.

She would like to host a collection of used clothing items to donate to a shelter along with reaching out to Rita’s Closet, a prom dress store in Westminster, to do a fashion show with some of their donated prom dresses. Rita’s Closet gives away scholarships and free dresses to those who can’t afford them and sells gently used gowns at a discounted price to fund the scholarships.

Heister also has some cool ideas to work with the SewTherapy Club to upgrade jean jackets with paint and embellishments. The jackets are very in right now.

The club is also trying to get a representative from The Claire McCardell Project to speak to the club members. Claire McCardell, who graduated from local Hood College, was an American fashion designer of ready-to-wear clothing in the Twentieth Century.

“She is credited with the creation of American sportswear.” said Kohle Yohannan, a fashion blogger. The club feels them being a new generation of  “Fashionistas” would love for someone from the organization to give a presentation on McCardell and the project and the influence of McCardell on women’s fashion today.

In this club they will also be running an Instagram @linganorefashionclub, which will promote fashion and trends that high school fashionistas can follow.

She asked  Troxel as the advisor because Troxel has a unique personal fashion style. Troxel loves thrifting and feels that helps it will her relate to many high school students as second-hand fashion is making a comeback.

Heister said, “Mrs. Troxel is so helpful and has many cool ideas. She also gives the perfect balance of help along with letting me do my own thing.”

The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising sponsors high school clubs all across America and is sponsoring this new group. With their sponsorship, club members will be eligible for scholarships for high school graduates.

The first club meeting will be February 7 in Troxel’s room C222. Students can pick up a flyer outside her room.
