Beau Cameron hopes to overpower the competition as Captain America
Beau Cameron is one of 12 contestants competing for the Mr. Linganore 2019 title. In honor of this year’s theme, A Night of Firsts, Cameron will be portraying Captain America, the first Avenger.
Cameron’s interpretation of his character has a fresh angle.
“I chose my character not because I relate to the Captain America you see for most of the movie, the big strong one. I relate more to the Captain America before he was Captain America, the scrappy kid from Brooklyn who got into fights, the one who tries so hard to do the right thing even after he fails.”
Like the young Captain America, Cameron believes one of his strengths in the competition will be his passion.
“I tend to throw myself into things. My core belief is that you’re supposed to give meaning to your own life. I go all out in everything that I do,” said Cameron.
His sister, Kate Cameron, can attest to this.
“Beau is extraordinarily creative. He has amazing ideas and the drive to finish them. He always gives his all to projects he is passionate about, and Mr. Linganore will be no different,” said Kate.
Cameron has written and composed his own song and dance number for his talent and opening act.
“I have a strong background in theatre and the arts, so I think that will make me a unique contestant,” said Cameron.
The Mr. Linganore competition pokes fun at traditional female beauty pageants. Cameron likes how the competition subverts stereotypes and the overall spirit that surrounds the experience.
Cameron praises the diversity among the competitors: there are band members, drama performers, athletes, and more.
Representing diversity is important to Cameron. He is co-vice president of the Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) and is an active advocate for the community. “I want them to feel safer and more included in this school,” said Cameron.
GSA adviser Jessica Baker said, “Beau is very passionate and well spoken. These things will definitely help him in the competition.” He hopes through his participation, it will give representation to the LGBTQ+ community.
“As far as I know I’m the only art student there. I see myself as a very creative person and I think that allows me to maybe do something more unexpected,” said Cameron.
